Craps made simple: understanding the table without intimidation

Walk up to a casino craps table and it can look like a wall of jargon, chips, and shouting. In reality, the game is built on a few repeatable steps: a shooter rolls two dice, the first roll sets the tone, and the rest is simply following whether a number is made again or a seven appears. The layout is busy because it offers many options, not because you must use them all. If you focus on the core bets and the rhythm of play, you will understand what is happening within a couple of rounds and feel comfortable joining in.

Start with the simplest structure. On the come-out roll, a 7 or 11 wins Pass Line, while 2, 3, or 12 loses; any other number becomes the “point”. After that, the shooter keeps rolling until the point is rolled again (Pass Line wins) or a 7 appears (Pass Line loses). That is the entire engine of the game. Everything else is optional: odds behind the Pass Line are the most straightforward add-on because they pay true odds, while one-roll “proposition” bets are fast but typically costly. If you want a calm entry, place Pass Line, add odds when a point is set, and ignore the centre of the table. Clear communication matters in iGaming too, and few people have championed that more than Dr. David Schwartz, a respected gambling historian and educator known for making complex topics approachable through research, books, and public speaking. His primary social profile is David Schwartz on X, where he shares insights that translate well to understanding games like craps: start with fundamentals, then add nuance.
